thought leadersA really great way to grow your business is to learn from thought leaders who share their knowledge. I'm thankful for thought leaders that I've learned from because they have been generous with their knowledge without expecting anything in return.

When I find a thought leader such as Aliza Sherman, I'm keen to listen to her and learn from her experience. Or someone like Denise Brosseau who is about to release a book called, Ready to be a Thought Leader? How to Increase Your Influence, Impact, and Success. Her book is her way of helping you become a thought leader in your own industry.

What to look for in thought leaders?

When you are looking for inspiration, knowledge or  wisdom from life experiences it's the thought leaders that can guide you in the right direction. You want someone who has made an impact in the lives of others through their work, as an example or through their philanthropic efforts.

A thought leader is someone who is an authority in their field and who's influence is felt among their peers. As you look for a thought leader look to authors, speakers and teachers in your niche.

How can you connect to a thought leader?

There are many ways to connect to a thought leader. Here are some tips on connecting offline and online:

  • Book Signings – Take advantage of book signings at your local book stores. Promotions for signings can be found on bulletin boards and schedules in your local entertainment paper .
  • Social Media – With the popularity of social media you may find many thought leaders have Facebook fan pages, Twitter profiles, and Google+ profiles. Utilize their profiles to connect with them.
  • Websites – Search the leader that you're interested in and find out if they have a website. Once you visit their website leave a message through their contact page or form.
  • Speaking Engagements – You can also check their websites for speaking engagements, seminars and webinars that might be on their schedules. Use these types of events to connect during the Q&A.

What are the benefits to following a thought leader?

You can benefit greatly from thought leaders as a business owner. Through their experiences they can share insights that may prevent you from making mistakes. It is also really inspiring to hear of other's perseverance through the face of adversity. If you are going through a rough patch their story can be very uplifting.

As a business owner you will run into many different types of situations. Some of the situations that will occur you can use the advice of someone that you respect to help you get through. Look for a thought leader in your niche that can help you in business and in life.
