Thankful31 Motivational Campaign, Day 2: My Siblings & Life

motivational campaignFor Day 2 of the Thankful31 Motivational Campaign, I want to share why I'm thankful for my siblings who have touched my life the longest outside of my parents. While growing up, I was always called the “baby of the family” because I'm the youngest and guess what, they still call me that even though I'm 48 as of the writing of this blog post. Yet, even in this endearment, I know that they love me and want what's best to come to me in my lifetime.

I'm the youngest of six (6) children and have always learned life lessons from my sisters and brothers. I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers who have taught me how to cook, clean, play sports and yes even how to stand up and appreciate who I am. The funny thing is that even though they taught me how to do all of these things, I really didn't get to apply my learned lessons until my much older sisters left home. LOL! Yep, they did all of the cooking, cleaning while I was growing up. Once they left home, then guess who got to cook & clean?

What Can The Thankful31 Motivational Campaign Teach You?

Good question because my expectation of this motivational campaign is that it will teach each of us to give to others and to live a motivational life. While growing up, I lived through a few life crises that caused me to re-evaluate my life and make changes. Some of the changes were hard and I have had my sibling support through them. I'm thankful that I've been able to turn to my siblings and be supported as I face the challenges that caused me to change.

Even though at times, I've had strained relationships with my siblings, I'm thankful to have them in my life. As I have learned how to overcome strained relationships, I realized that each of my siblings are unique and that each one has a unique way of communicating as they deal with life issues. According to Riana Milne, Certified Relationship Coach in her article Thanksgiving & Sibling Relationships, she shares 7 tips about how to improve strained sibling relationships…

  • A time to count your many blessings and give gratitude for life and all its glory.
  • Forgive and let go of the past.
  • Be “socially polite” to any difficult family member and be certain not to discuss any personal or hot topics.
  • If your sibling did anything abusive or sexually molested you, don’t feel you need to be at the same gathering as them.
  • Chose to have a smaller Thanksgiving with your immediate family, or treat yourselves to a nice dinner out. Chose to surround yourself with positive people.
  • Be positive and non-blaming when you meet with your siblings.
  • Be proud that you tried to heal old childhood issues and let go of the result. About 65% of siblings are willing to heal the past and have a new relationship.

With this in mind, my Thankful31 motivational tip today is to be thankful for your family and choose to open up your heart for forgiveness.
